Chapter 72: Deathbringer Mercenary Squad (3)
PA-!!!
The resounding slap echoed in the enclosed space. The young master placed his hand on his cheek, feeling the burning sensation. His father had not held back.
\'Why?! Why is he acting so strangely?\' he thought, shocked and confused.
"Do you take me for a fool?! Do you think I did what I did for no reason at all?!" Lord Deathbringer\'s voice was cold as he sat down, closing his eyes and rubbing his brows.
He heaved a sigh of relief, feeling the tightness in his chest dissipate. \'I managed to dodge a bullet this time.\'
Now that the feeling was gone, his gaze landed on his son as he began to explain. "We were being watched by someone I don\'t dare to mess with. We were being watched by the Ice Queen."
"The Ice Queen?" the young master\'s eyes widened in sudden realization. "You mean the famous Ice Queen of the Secluded Sect?"
His father nodded. Seeing that, the young master gulped and slumped into a nearby seat, just hearing the name alone weakening him.
He now understood why his father did not take action against Leon. But he was still confused. "But father, what could the Ice Queen be doing in a place like this?"
Lord Deathbringer\'s expression softened slightly as he replied, "That\'s what makes her so dangerous. Her motives are always shrouded in mystery. If she was here, it means there was something—or someone—she was interested in. Interfering could have led to our ruin."
The young master nodded slowly, absorbing his father\'s words. The weight of the situation settled on him, and he realized just how close they had come to disaster. He glanced out the window, watching Leon\'s figure disappear into the distance, a mix of frustration and relief washing over him.
Deathbringer sighed, his eyes heavy with the burden of unspoken memories. He wasn\'t surprised that his son hadn\'t noticed the subtle aura. Even he had almost been fooled. The Ice Queen had lowered her aura just enough not to cause trouble, but hadn\'t bothered to conceal it completely. A cautious man like him could easily sense it.
He had encountered this aura once before, an experience that had scarred him for life. He would never forget that unique, chilling presence.
Recalling the moment he had recognized the aura, Deathbringer shivered slightly. He looked at his son, resignation etched into his features. "She was at the banquet. In fact, she was the reason I didn\'t take action against the Viscount. I went there intending to cause chaos, perhaps even force the Viscount to annul the engagement. But the moment I felt her aura, I canceled all my plans.
She\'s also the reason we left in such a hurry despite arriving only a few hours ago. It seems the Dawnblade clan has a connection with the Glacial Frost Lotus Sect, and for the sect leader to be here, that connection must be significant."
The young master clenched his fists in frustration, feeling the sting of his own powerlessness. While his father\'s strength might rival that of the Viscount, the Ice Queen was a different matter altogether. Her presence meant that offending the Dawnblade clan was tantamount to offending her. His father and the entire mercenary company were nothing compared to her immense power.
Even the Royal family wouldn\'t dare to provoke the Ice Queen or the Glacial Frost Lotus Sect. He wiped beads of perspiration from his forehead, his back drenched with cold sweat as the reality of their narrow escape sank in.
\'Damn it, I was really courting death back there,\' he thought, shivering at the memory. The temptation to ignore his father\'s call and attack Leon had been overwhelming. The young master couldn\'t help but imagine the disastrous consequences if he had followed through with that reckless impulse. He might not have lived to regret it.
Deathbringer, seeing the dawning realization on his son\'s face, nodded approvingly. "Now you understand. We must tread carefully. Power and influence mean nothing if we\'re dead. Leon has unknowingly garnered the protection of someone far beyond our reach. For now, we watch, we learn, and we wait.
Our time will come, but we must be wise."
The young master nodded reluctantly, understanding the wisdom in his father\'s words, even as the frustration of unfulfilled desires gnawed at him.
Meanwhile, high above the scene, Seraphina watched the departing carriage with a cold gaze. She had followed them, knowing Leon would likely be on his way back after clearing the dungeon. If the Deathbringer Mercenary Squad had forced Leon\'s hand, they would have faced annihilation at his wrath. Such sudden deaths near the Viscount\'s estate could lead to the Viscount taking the blame.
Seraphina knew Leon had likely considered this as well, judging by his calm reaction to their taunts.
Once the carriage was a safe distance away, Seraphina descended gracefully, her form slicing through the night air with the elegance of a falling star. She landed softly in front of Leon, who walked with the same casual ease in the darkness as he would in daylight, unaffected by the lack of light.
"Welcome back, master," Seraphina said, bowing deeply.
Leon\'s eyes flickered with a brief, predatory gleam as he regarded Seraphina. The thought of her untainted purity stirred something primal within him, but he quickly pushed it aside, maintaining his composure.
"Good timing," Leon replied, his voice steady. "Walking in this place was starting to get boring..."
He now knew why Deathbringer was acting the way he was. It\'s because Seraphina was watching.
