Chapter 9

After they had paid her, she checked the pulse of every single villager. She then went to town to get the cure after ascertaining their symptoms.

The herbs that she used for the prescription did not cost much. During those times, one piece of silver was equivalent to one thousand cents. A batch of medicine cost around twenty cents.

The level of medical knowledge in that era was much lower than what Zhao Chuchu imagined it to be.

Perhaps due to the epidemic, most of the other shops, other than the pharmacies, were closed.

The plague was considered a fatal disease during those times.

Two officials had accompanied Zhao Chuchu to town to purchase the medicine.

As Zhao Chuchu was unable to get any information that she wanted from the townspeople, she tried to fish for information from the officials.

The officials behaved very respectfully toward Zhao Chuchu as she was able to cure people of the plague. They shared with her whatever they knew and did not hold back anything.

Zhao Chuchu now knew quite a bit about the Wei Dynasty from the officials.

However, since the most important thing now was to deal with the plague, she decided to push everything else to the back of her mind.

When Zhao Chuchu returned to the village with the herbs, she got those villagers who first drank the medicine to help brew them.

When the soup was ready, they distributed it to the other infected villagers.

The next day, those villagers immediately felt better after drinking the medicine. The pain of parting with two pieces of silver was somewhat eased.

At least they managed to save their lives with the money.

It was the fourth day that Zhao Chuchu had traveled to this era.

For the past three days, she had never been able to find an opportunity to speak to Xie Heng.

That day, she finally had some free time. Xie Heng looked her up first.

On seeing Xie Heng hesitate when he saw her, Zhao Chuchu spoke up. “Do you have something to say to me?”

Xie Heng nodded and pointed to the yard outside.

Zhao Chuchu understood what he meant and helped him out to an open space where no one could hide and eavesdrop on their conversation.

“You’re not Zhao Chuchu.” Xie Heng said directly. “She can’t read or write. Nor can she understand medicine. She can’t even speak.”

“My maternal grandfather was a doctor, it’s nothing unusual for me to learn medical skills...”

“Zhao Chuchu is dead. Who the hell are you?” Xie Heng interrupted her curtly.

“I am Zhao Chuchu.” Of course, Zhao Chuchu knew that the real person had died. Her death had nothing to do with Xie Heng. She had passed on because of an illness.

Xie Heng shook his head. “You’re not her. I just want to know, what is it that you want?”

Zhao Chuchu looked at him in surprise. She asked, “Aren’t you afraid that I will kill you?”

“If you can ask this question, it means you won’t kill me.” Xie Heng turned his gaze in Zhao Chuchu’s direction, as though he was looking at her. “What exactly do you want?”

Zhao Chuchu rubbed her chin. “You’re putting up a really good act like a blind man. It’s not easy to pretend. But then again, you became a scholar at the age of twelve. You must be really clever.” she thought.

Zhao Chuchu did not beat around the bush. She went straight to the point.

“If I cure your brother, I want you to give me a divorce letter.”

“All right.”

Xie Heng agreed without hesitation.

“Do you have any more questions?”

“No, they are none of my concern.”

Ever since Xie Heng sensed that Zhao Chuchu was a different person, he always had one question in his mind,

If this Zhao Chuchu could cure Xie Jun, what would he be able to give her in exchange?

He guessed that because she had nothing to her name, thus the thing that she wanted the most would be the divorce letter.

“I will give you the divorce letter once I get back home.”

“Aren’t you afraid that I’ll go back on my words?”

“I know you won’t.

If Zhao Chuchu dared to harm Xie Jun in any way, Xie Heng vowed to make her suffer a life worse than death.

Zhao Chuchu looked at Xie Heng intently.

His old and torn clothes could not take his good looks away. His only flaw was his dull-looking eyes. However, it complimented the look on his face as it added a certain air of coolness.

If those eyes shined brightly and lively instead, his looks would be perfect.

Zhao Chuchu looked away. “Why are you pretending to be blind?”
