Chapter 995: Swift Work
Chapter 995: Swift Work
"Mnh... ngh?!"
Though he was feeling greatly rested, a slight look of annoyance appeared on the young man\'s face as he was rudely woken up by the ground rumbling.
Fortunately, it did not take too long for his consciousness to fully awaken from its slumber, prompting him to put two and two together as his expression immediately turned serious. "How much time has passed since I went to sleep?" Asking this question to himself, Valyr swiftly headed to the bathroom to wash up his face as he brought up his status screen in front of him.
Seeing that over a day had passed since he fell asleep, Valyr slightly clicked his tongue before sighing.
"So, the monster tide has already begun."
Forgetting the annoyance and anger he had from being rudely woken up by the rumbling, Valyr went through a simplified version of his routine as he prepared himself to head outside the town\'s walls.
Double checking to see if he\'d forgotten anything, Valyr eventually headed outside of the room after seeing that his spear was affixed to his back.
Moving through the hall\'s corridors at a slightly hastened pace, the young man was forced to stop after seeing a woman in her late 20s stand before him, wearing what looked to be clothing similar to what Alfaera wore.
"Are you Valyr?" As a young man wearing a full set of armor swiftly appeared before her vision, the woman knew that it was her cue.
"And you are?" In response to the question, the young man stopped in his tracks, narrowing his eyes as he looked back at her.
"Call me Claire." The woman faintly smiled, doing a curtsy as she spoke her thoughts to him. "I\'m usually Mayor Astarto\'s secretary, but I\'ve been ordered by her to wait for you until you woke up from your slumber."
Hearing the woman identify herself, as well as tell him why she obstructed her way, Valyr\'s eyes slightly widened in surprise.
"Did she have anything to say to me?" the young man asked back. "Surely, she didn\'t just ask you to wait for me, right?"
"Of course not. It would be a waste of the town\'s manpower if that were the case." Claire let out a slight chuckle, only for her expression to become serious as the hall rumbled once more.
Letting the rumbling subside, Claire inwardly let out a sigh of relief before looking back at Valyr.
"In any case, Mayor Astarto told me that if you\'d woken up after the monster tide had already begun, I needed to escort you to the town\'s walls, as well as tell you something beforehand." Valyr raised his eyebrow at the final part of her statement. "And that would be?"
"Don\'t rush too much," said Claire in response, her face now adorning a proud smile.
"By the time you get here, we would have probably cleared most of the monster tide already."
...
"How are the various quadrants holding up?"
Wearing a set of light armor made out of black leather, Alfaera sported a serious expression as she looked at the two people beside her.
"Pretty good with all things considered," said Tristan, who was currently wearing a set of heavy metal armor. "The first wave was cleared by the trainees of the military corps working alongside most of the town guards."
"The second wave was also cleared by them," said Myst, faintly nodding as she continued where Tristan left off.
"With how much their strengths have increased after dealing with the second wave, I suppose it wouldn\'t be far-fetched to let them handle the third one?"
"Hmm..." Hearing Myst\'s words, Alfaera put on a pensive expression.
With how every subsequent monster tide the town faced grew in strength, it was no surprise that the monster tides began to increase in length as well.
During the last monster tide Valyr participated in, the former village only needed to face a total of four waves before facing off against the boss monster, equating to five waves in total.
On the other hand, the most recent monster tide before the current one lasted for far longer, with the town having to defend against seven waves straight before being able to face against the Greater Tidemother.
Now?
From what Alfaera and the others could tell, the town would have to face a total of eight waves before the leader of the entire tide would make its move, its massive body giving off an aura that surpassed the previous Greater Tidemother they faced off in every aspect.
Fortunately for them, with how much the town has improved its combat strength during the past nine months, the first eight waves were more or less doable.
"Let them handle the third wave," said Alfaera to the two, prompting both Tristan and Myst to nod as they relayed her words. "However, have the captains keep an eye on them just in
case."
"They have to risk their lives a little bit if they want to gain more strength," Though he sent Alfaera\'s commands to the quadrant captains in verbatim, Tristan had a different thought. "As long as those little guys clear the third wave, it won\'t be long until the town has a capable military force."
"With how many monsters they\'re up against in the current wave..." Myst closed her eyes for a bit before nodding at Tristan\'s words. "Yeah, they\'d probably reach the peak of Rank 2."
"I know." Alfaera nodded at their words. "It\'s why I had them move in the first place." "However, we\'ll have the more experienced combatants take the lead from the fourth wave onward. After all, the newcomers aren\'t strong enough to handle the peak Rank 2 monsters of the tide just yet."
"We\'ll pass your message to the other quadrants in preparation," said both Tristan and Myst in response to her words, prompting the two to distance themselves from Alfaera for a bit as they utilized their system\'s chat function to send a message to the respective quadrants.
In the meantime, Alfaera continued to look at the entire battlefield from afar, her expression neutral as various thoughts lingered in her mind at that moment.
Ding!
Receiving a notification sound in the middle of the monster tide all of a sudden, Alfaera was forced to shelf her thoughts to the side as she wondered what made her get the notification in
the first place.
Though, once she read through the notification she received, the frown she initially had
gradually turned into a faint smile, looking back at the battlefield with a renewed sense of
confidence.
"And so, the Tidebreaker is finally making his return, huh?"
