Vol. 3 - Chapter 59.1 - Side story - In hospital

It had been close to half a year since I started my treatment and everyone\'s face had gained some vitality and no one was coughing anymore.

All that was left was to switch to weekly intramuscular injections as a precaution, and the girls would be fine. With this, it should be more than enough to cope with the side effects.

"Honestly, I\'m really surprised! To be able to recover from the so-called incurable disease [Pulmonary Tuberculosis] with that method of treatment! This is really amazing!!"

The family doctor of Lord Kruger raised his voice in amazement for the umpteenth time.

He cheerfully reported to me every week about how his patients were getting better and better day by day.

"The treatment has come to a point where you can rest now, so why don\'t you study at the research institute of medical college in Rudol*? The selection for the second half of research students will soon begin, and I can write you a letter of introduction if you\'d like."

His passion for medicine was real, and he was the kind of person who should be actively studying medicine.

"I-Is it true!? I was introduced to it through an acquaintance of mine who is a director of a Commercial Guild, but the application rate is so high that I thought it would be hopeless for another few years."

The requirement to enter the research institute of medical college was either you had to be a citizen of Rudol or a doctor who had been introduced by the Sagami Co. or the Commercial Guild.

When the research students reported about the contents of the research institute or their life in Rudol, rumors began to spread and applications began to flood in.

"Of course. I will write one right away."

"Thank you very much!!"

The attendant doctor bowed to me gratefully, with joy written all over his face.

After I left the hospital room, the steward of the mansion led me to the reception room.

"Lord Grey, on behalf of this mansion, I thank you."

Horus Kruger-dono, the Minister of Military Affairs, once again gave me a salute, and the other residents of the house followed suit.

Their treatment had been beneficial to me as well. Therefore, any gratitude was unnecessary, but it would be rude to deny it.

That\'s why, I changed the topic to the pressing issue at hand.

"It\'s all right. So, I heard you found something about the matter you were talking about?"

"Yes, it seems that Fall Cyrus is engaged in a live-in job at a trading company in the capital."

The only thing that had been confiscated was the Cyrus family\'s territory. Although they had paid a considerable sum as compensation for damage, they should have been allowed to keep enough money to live as before for a few years.

If he withdrew to the countryside near Straheim, where prices were low, he could live in seclusion for a decade or more without being known as the traitorous Cyrus. Yet, he didn’t seem to willingly get separated from the capital.

Most likely the reason is—

"Because of Mia and Miruru?"

"That\'s how it seems. The only member among Cyrus family, who is a wealthy merchant in the capital, has become his sponsor."

The Cyrus family was the traitor of this empire. And employing someone from that family.......he must be considerably determined for that. If it was an empire merchant who cared about his reputation, he would definitely want to avoid troublesome matters like this at any cost.

"Is it because of obligation or something?"

"Apparently, he was helped by Fall Cyrus when he was near bankruptcy," Lord Horus shrugged his shoulders sarcastically.

I had completely the same opinion. If he was going to help someone, then why didn’t he help Miruru or Mia? Was it really that scary to go against the will of the head of family, Bail Cyrus?

"I will talk to him once. I hope you don\'t talk about this matter with Miruru Cyrus yet."

I was sure that if she got to know about this, she would probably rush up to Fall immediately. I was sure it would leave some lingering discomfort as a result for them.

"I haven\'t told the person yet because I think it would be better. This is his current residence address."

"Thank you very much. Then I will take my leave with this."

I stood up, bowed, and left Duke Kruger-dono’s mansion.

◇◆◇◆◇◆

First, I was going to start a detailed investigation of Fall Cyrus. He was going by the alias Fou, and was engaging in the work of a company.

From unloading to carrying luggage. He wasn\'t badly received by his colleagues, and he seemed to be diligently performing miscellaneous tasks, such as assisting senior merchants in their business negotiation. At the very least, they were recognising Fall as fellow brethren of the same company.

"Here is.....?"

Fall was living in the dilapidated building on the outskirts of the central district of the imperial capital, Lemuria. This was the building he’d got through the mediation of his employer, so it was basically rent-free. This imperial capital had become a harsh place for the members of Cyrus family to live in.

I really couldn\'t tell why he was trying to stay in the capital deliberately amidst all of this.

Hatch, bring Miruru to me.

I began to kill time around, after instructing Hatch. After a while, a blonde woman with a completely renewed complexion appeared, accompanied by Miruru.

"Now you\'re going to meet the person you want to meet the most. Find out what\'s in his mind, and decide whether or not you want to meet him."

"........."

After confirming, she nodded with a mysterious look on her face, as if she was tackling her destiny. I entered the building and knocked on the door of the place where Fall was living.

The door opened slightly, and a young man with blond hair peeked out. This timid-looking young man should be Fall, I guessed.

"Who are you running an errand for?"

When he looked at my childish appearance, he lowered his vigilance a bit and asked me kindly. This wasn\'t the kind of attitude formed by several months of harsh environment. Because of this natural behavior, his humble attitude hadn\'t changed much since the time of Cyrus family.

"I\'m a messenger from the guardian of Miruru Cyrus."

As soon as he heard this, his complexion changed, and he tried to close the door immediately. However, I slipped my foot in between the gap to avoid him from doing so and said, "How long are you planning to run away? The only reason you\'re here is because you care about Miruru and Mia, isn\'t it?"

Otherwise, there was no other reason for Fall to live in this place where many people were familiar with his face.

".........."

At my words, Fall bit his lower lip and turned over, his whole body trembling slightly.

"I\'m not going to do something bad. Just listen to what I have to say."

"Please."

Then, the door opened slowly and Fall invited me inside the room with a fading voice.

"I see, so you didn\'t plan to abandon them, but you let them go because you feared that your wife and children might be harmed by Bail Cyrus?"

"My older brother never forgives those who crossed him. If I had let Miruru and Mia in my care, they would have been killed."

Fall nodded and talked to himself with an expression of tragic heroism, as if he was about to die. Well, I could understand this because I had been harmed once.

"But then, why did you leave Miruru alone until that happened? Do you know that at one point, they even had to beg for money until their bodies were almost tattered?"

"Because I wasn\'t even able to enquire about their situation!! All of them! All of the maids and stewards around me were his puppet. If I had met Miruru and Mia, my older brother would have found out. And if that happens......."

"They would have been killed. That’s what you think, right?"

"............"

I let out a big sigh.

Geez, he really is a hopeless man.

"Everything you\'re saying is just an excuse with no consideration of their situation. Do you understand that?"

".........."

At my words, he said nothing. He turned his head, his body shivering, tears streaming down. He nodded his head.

"No matter what the excuse is, you could have predicted with a little thought what would have happened if you handed over only a little money and cast them away."

"Ye.......s."

I stared at Fall’s eyes, as he repeatedly nodded, and continued, "You have betrayed them in the worst possible way. Because of that, her mother was afflicted with a disease for a long time. Mia, your daughter, will never forgive you."

I was sure of it. In Mia\'s current situation, it wasn’t surprising that she held a grudge against Fall, even more than she did for Bail. In fact, Mia never opened her mouth when I asked her about her father.

"I know. I know that we can\'t see each other. That\'s why—"

"That\'s why you send some funds to Duke Kruger’s residence every month, right?"

"......"

He nodded.

As expected. Every month, Duke Kruger received a cloth bag of money from a carrier, addressed to Miruru, without a sender’s name.

"Your actions are completely off the mark. Certainly right now Mia is definitely not going to forgive you. However, that will not be the case from now on."

When he nervously looked up at me, I said, "And whether she holds a grudge against your wife is another matter."

"B-but I—"

"Dear!!"

The door of the room opened with a thud, and a blonde woman walked in and hugged Fall.

"Miruru.......?"

Looking at the woman hugging him and pressing her face against her chest, he called out her name.

"I don\'t care anymore. Let\'s start all over again as a family!"

"B-But I—"

Fall\'s words of rebuttal were blocked by Miruru\'s lips.

Miruru and Fall had reached a settlement. The rest depended on Mia\'s feelings. She was a stubborn girl. I was sure it would not be resolved so easily. Anyway, it would be uncouth to stay here anymore than this.

"Let\'s go," I urged Hatch, and we left Fall’s house.
