Chapter 33: 31. Two Mothers
On the other hand, the two adult witches were quite composed.
"Who do you think will win?"
The petite stepmother was the first to speak, shifting her gaze from the field to gauge the reactions of her peers.
"Of course, Sophia."
The tall Dragon Witch kept her eyes on the field, did not turn her head, but replied almost without hesitation.
"Heh, is that how little you think of your daughter? How much do you even know about Dorothy?"
The Dragon Witch’s response disappointed Annie. The stepmother shook her head and continued to watch the field, but her tone became somewhat sarcastic.
"This is not about looking down on her. I’m just stating facts."
The sharp sarcasm made Euphilia involuntarily furrow her brow, but what the other said was indeed the truth. The Dragon Witch swallowed her pride and continued to explain in her icy tone.
"From a young age, I personally mentored Sophia. Her talent is no less than mine, and now, she is even stronger than I was at her age. At just 16, having reached adulthood, she is only a step away from becoming a Great Witch. Even when you look at her peers around the world, she is among the most outstanding."
"I truly don’t know much about Dorothy, and there is no need to hide that. After all, I only found her yesterday. Although I had someone gather information on what Dorothy’s been doing over the years, it seems from the records that she has been wasting her talent. I find it hard to believe that my daughter could end up being a..."
After leaving yesterday, Euphilia dispatched someone to compile her daughter’s achievements over the years. However, seeing the life experiences that could be summed up in a few sentences, the Dragon Witch nearly lost her composure.
An online gaming addict? A hardcore homebody? Barely leaves the house a few times a year? Attends and completes Mage School courses and exams through online classes? Hardly ever visited the school from enrolment to graduation? Only just managed to reach a magic power of 1w at the age of sixteen, barely meeting the Witch Academy’s entrance requirements?
Seeing her own daughter fall to such depths, the ambitious and upwardly driven Euphilia found it hard to accept. She had to resist the urge to confront Adam right there and then - is this how he had been raising their daughter all these years?
This further solidified the Dragon Witch’s resolve to take her daughter home, especially after seeing Dorothy use the Dragon’s Breath in the arena, her elation soared. Her daughter had inherited the core Talent of the Great Dragon - such natural gifts should not be squandered.
Adam, look at what you’ve done all these years, you bastard.
Euphilia felt that she had already failed her daughter for 16 years. From now on, she was determined to repay that debt twice over. Upon her return, she planned to hand over all family matters to others and focus on training her daughter. She was confident that under her intensive coaching, Dorothy would soon catch up to and surpass Sophia, her disciple.
After all, Sophia was an Angel Witch. Many of the Dragon Witch’s techniques and ultimate teachings were not suitable for her, but it was different for Dorothy. Her daughter could perfectly inherit everything from her.
"A homebody?"
Annie completed the sentence Euphilia had left unfinished, with the petite stepmother smiling, the condescension in her smile now even thicker.
"It’s truly befitting of the renowned new Archduke from the Dragon Kingdom, His Excellency the Dragon of Calamity, to be so stringent."
"But now I am sure, you and Dorothy really don’t get along, do you? Even if you forcibly take her back, I bet that child won’t take long to escape again."
For a mother, perhaps there is nothing more infuriating than such mockery, not to mention the domineering Dragon Witch was never known for her good temper.
Her gaze finally shifted away from the arena and for the first time, she looked directly at the fellow witch beside her. Towering in stature, she looked down on the petite witch, her presence utterly oppressive.
"You seem to have quite an opinion of me, so do you have any better ideas, or perhaps you have been secretly teaching Dorothy something over the years, Red Moon Witch from the Blood Moon Twins?"
"Oh my, to think such a great personage would be aware of a minor character like me, I’m truly flattered."
Facing the pressure from the Dragon Witch, more terrifying than a Great Dragon itself, the petite stepmother didn’t show a hint of fear. She merely smiled gracefully, her wine-red eyes sparkling with a crimson light.
"When a hostile visitor comes knocking, of course, I respond with a shotgun. Although I’m just a stepmother and don’t see eye to eye with that girl Dorothy, she is still my family, my stepdaughter. When one’s own child is slighted, it’s natural for a parent to stand up for them."
Although Annie was only half as tall, her aura was unexpectedly commanding, not even the Peak Witch’s intimidation could make her waver in the slightest.
"You might be my senior on the path of witchcraft, but as a mother, oh Dragon of Calamity, you’re still too green. I hope you take the time to learn how to be a qualified mother. Dorothy is your daughter, true, but she is also an independent person, not your puppet. What you think is a good child may not be to her liking. I don’t want my good stepdaughter to turn into a clone similar to you.
I’ve said my piece."
"Tch, I really can’t stand the inexplicable need for control that you Dragon Witches have. Don’t guess anymore. I haven’t taught Dorothy a thing; I don’t have the skill to teach her. Just watch; your daughter might just surprise you."
"So you’re saying Dorothy might win?"
The Dragon Witch raised an eyebrow and asked.
"No, she’s bound to lose, 10,000 Magic Power against 290,000, it would be a miracle if she won."
Annie rolled her eyes as she responded.
"You...."
Feeling mocked, the Dragon Witch’s temper flared on the spot, but in the end, she managed to suppress her anger and huffily turned to watch the match, ignoring the ’shorty’.
Hmph, for Dorothy’s sake, she would forgive this creature once. Damn vampire, otherwise, I’d break all your sharp, pointy teeth.
However, thinking this way, Euphilia took the duel more seriously when she watched it again.
She indeed lacked the experience as a mother; she had wanted to be a good one but ultimately didn’t get the chance. If possible, she really wanted to make up for past regrets.
So what exactly was this shorty vampire trying to say?
After pondering for a long time and still not quite getting it, the Dragon Witch’s fist clenched. She felt like she did back when facing the Fortune Teller, wishing she could just smash these damn riddle-mongers with a single punch.
Never mind, just watch the match, she urged herself, looking forward to Dorothy truly bringing her a surprise.
