Other than the boys and girls playing outside with the animals, there were a few students who remained in the house and helped with the dumplings. Fu Tao took the snack box that Wang Qian and Li Kun sent into the house and distributed them among the students. Other than the female student who was one a diet, everyone was able to get two to three pieces.
Wang Qian and Li Kun’s snacks were very good but were a little too sweet. Fu Tao took out some loose tea leaves and boiled a pot of hot water, so the students were able to have some tea with the snacks
The snacks that Zhang Zian brought weren’t enough to be distributed among so many people, so not everyone got a piece. Fu Tao came out the house holding the empty box, looking for a place to get rid of it.
“Master Fu.” Zhang Zian looked at him. “I’d like to have a word with you.”
Fu Tao walked over, feeling puzzled. “What’s the matter?”
Zhang Zian explained, “The film crew has trusted you to take care of a few German Shepherds, right? Everyone misses the dogs. Since most of the crew have already joined other films, I’m the only one left in Binhai City, and they asked me to take a few pictures for them. Do you think it’s convenient for me to do so now?
“What’s inconvenient about that?” Fu Tao threw away the empty box and removed a bunch of keys hanging from his waist. “Come, take your pictures.”
Zhang Zian and Famous followed him to the dog kennel. Ning Lan hesitated for a moment. Once she saw that they didn’t have any objections, she followed as well.
The moment the door to the kennel opened, the German Shepherds started barking. The loudest one was the dog with the biggest teeth. Conversely, the few police dogs that were originally from the nursing home didn’t bark, they only looked at Zhang Zian. He wasn’t sure if they reacted this way because they were getting older or because they were well-trained.
After entering the kennel, Zhang Zian secretly observed that the kennel was much cleaner than last time. The cleaning supplies were easily accessible as they were right by the door. The food bowls were upgraded to standard aluminum, each bowl had a number that corresponded to a cage number.
There was a flower vase on the windowsill, with a bundle of pale yellow carnations, giving off a light floral fragrance. Thanks to the pop of color, the dark and dull kennel now had a little liveliness.
“This was all their doing.” Fu Tao raised his chin towards Ning Lan, “I wouldn’t have been able to handle everything myself. I’ve told her many times not to do all these meaningless things, spending unnecessary money. Like that, what use is there for a flower vase in a dog kennel?”
“Flowers aren’t that expensive,” Ning Lan quickly explained. “Besides, I didn’t buy the flowers, they’re from a popular sister from my hostel who received them. She’s dating a guy from a rich family, and gets flowers every day. I bring the old flowers here because it’d be a waste to throw them away.”
“Even if it doesn’t cost any money, it’s still meaningless!” Fu Tao said, shaking his head. “It’s just a matter of time before the flowers die, so it’ll still be thrown away.”
“I actually don’t think it’s that bad.” Zhang Zian supported Ning Lan’s actions. “Just leave it there, it’s not in the way. You can talk about it again when the flowers die. You can’t just refuse flowers because they’re going to wilt soon, that’s like rejecting an animal because they’re going to die.”
“Right?” Seeing that Zhang Zian was on her side, Ning Lan smiled.
Fu Tao let out a sigh. “I don’t understand the two of you.”
“Master Fu, the food is ready.” A guy wearing glasses came in, pushing a cart.
“Okay, I’ll do it.” Fu Tao walked over with the intention of feeding the dogs.
The guy quickly stopped him. “No, Master Fu, you can rest. We’ll do it today.”
“Yep!” Ning Lan quickly snatched the scoop. “Just tell us what to do.”
Zhang Zian pretended to unwittingly walk over to peek at the food as well as secretly take pictures of it with his phone.
In addition to the food pellets, there were two steaming bowls. One was full of mixed vegetables—cabbage, potato, carrots, eggplants and more—all cut into small pieces and stewed. Although the presentation wasn’t much, it was very nutritious. The other bowl had stewed pork belly, with soup and meat. Such a greasy dish wasn’t popular among most girls, but it was definitely a delicacy to dogs.
“The food here isn’t bad.” Zhang Zian pretended to be surprised. “Do they eat such good food every day?”
“They have vegetables every day. They have pork once every two days since quite a number of families in the village are slaughtering their pigs, making it cheaper. If chicken is cheaper, they’ll have that instead.” Fu Tao hesitated as he stammered: “The meal allowance the crew sent over was meant for the German Shepherds, but usually it’s just me, and I can’t make two different sets of food for a single meal.”
What Fu Tao was trying to say was that the meal allowance was supposed to be specifically for the German Shepherds, but Fu Tao didn’t go to such lengths. He just upgraded all the dogs’ food.
Zhang Zian nodded. He didn’t blame Fu Tao; he’d do the same thing… As long as Fu Tao didn’t put the money into his own pocket, everything was fine. Zhang Zian didn’t believe Fu Tao would ever do such a thing. If he really wanted money, wasn’t there so many other things he could’ve done besides opening a police dog nursing home?
“It’s okay. You lack manpower, it’s understandable.” Zhang Zian casually wrote it off.
Ning Lan and the other guy had a great partnership going on, it was clear that this wasn’t their first time feeding the dogs. The guy pushed the cart, stopping in front of every dog cage, while Ning Lan scooped a big portion of food pellets and stewed vegetables, and a small portion of stewed pork belly into each food bowl.
All the dogs with food immediately started eating, while those that didn’t yet have food were running in circles, waiting impatiently for their turn.
