Chapter 95

I felt a bit guilty when I had to treat an old man like this. I was taught by my father to respect the Elders and love the Younger. But, I was feeling rather impulsive right now. I felt my life was in jumble, as if someone wanted to fast forward my life into a certain point. Even before I could breathe freely from the life changing event happened in my life, I was sucked into this place that I was not familiar with.

Who wouldn’t get mad if one was pushed around like a ball to do something one was not familiar before?

When a person was upset, the person was bound to do something impulsive.

Just like me.

I broke that old man’s finger, only because I didn’t like the way he pointed at me and talked to me.

Father, I’m so sorry I forgot about all of your teachings!

But, my anger didn’t disappear just like that. Instead, I was getting more upset seeing those old men’s way to talk to me.

“I guess I was right that you were talking about me.” I sneered. “But, before I start asking about the point of your discussion, do I know any of you?” I walked calmly and kicked a chair to the table like a ruffian, then sat down in the same circle as them. I totally ignored the look they gave me, instead, I peered at them one by one, demanding answer from my questions with the slightest hum from my throat.

.....

“Miss Harris...” One of them attempted to talk.

“Just Jane, thank you.” I cut him off, feeling uneasy for unknown reason if they were to call me Miss Harris. Probably because of the guilt, probably because I was not used to it. There had never been anyone who called me Miss Harris before.

That person cleared his throat. “Jane. We’re the guardians of the legacy. Our main task is to assess the ability of the First Army, also known as the White Army, and their readiness in facing any threat or danger or challenges. It includes the presence of Adviser, General, and the Master of the army. If any one of these aspects is not satisfied, we couldn’t possibly allow the army to be operated. The legacy has clearly said that these three main pillars need to be existed for the army to be able to move. As the guardians of the legacy, we don’t want any unexpected incidents happen because we don’t obey the legacy.” The man patiently explained themselves.

Guardian of the legacy.

I pinched the bridge of my nose. What kind of joke is this? Why am I entangled myself with this so called legacy?

Whose legacy is this, actually?

“This is the legacy of the first White Army Master, also the founder of the White Army, who commanded the army for more than two decades.” As if hearing the question inside my head, the man continued speaking.

I squinted my eyes as I heard him talking. Then, I looked at the others who were eyeing me in displeasure; especially the one who got his finger broken by me. Well, it had been fixed, but he was still feeling sour.

“And, how is it related to me?”

“The current White Army is missing its General. The last general finished his time years ago. An army without a general could bring side effects to the Master if the Master forcibly uses the army.” The man continued.

“So, that’s what you meant by ‘request’?” I arched my eyebrows.

They exchanged glances before they nodded to my questions.

These old men were seriously cute with the way they nodded their heads in unison like that.

“How much do you know I am the new master?”

“We only happened to know it today, that a new master has come. Seventh Adviser has shown us your picture before.” Another man, the new voice, said.

“Look, little girl, you’re still a kid. It’s better for you to heed what we are saying. Unless you want yourself to be driven mad, then you better listen to us. Don’t use the army before the general appears! You can’t bear the consequences. Your power won’t be able to control the overwhelming power those hundreds men possessed. You’ll end up getting swallowed by it.” Another old man spoke, but instead of full with worry like how an elder supposed to be towards younger generation, his voice was full of discontentment.

He was the fifth person I heard before. I blinked my eyes as I stared right at him. He might feel uneasy for being stared like this that he averted his gaze.

“Old man, tell me, how old was the youngest master before?” I looked at the kind old man who was smiling after listening to my question.

“Thirty five years old.” He answered.

His answer made me realized why they were so opposed to me. But, I couldn’t help but chuckle lightly.

“No wonder you are so opposed to me and had been calling me a kid all along. Surely you won’t feel secure with a teenager as the new master. I am still what, seventeen years old. I will be turning eighteen in a month, but still I am too much younger than the youngest master before.” I spoke calmly. “But, you know what, I’ve used the army before. I’ve held captive an old man who was dead set to kill me and killed a shadow with the men’s help even before Siji came.”

I watched their reactions in amusement when they heard I had used the men before. Their eyes widened in comical ways as their jaws almost touched the floor.
